Water Mafia in South Africa – Government Takes Action
Problem: Criminal groups (called the “water mafia”) are damaging water infrastructure (pipes, pumps, valves) and then selling water at high prices.
Result:
Water supply is cut off.
Infrastructure is repeatedly destroyed.
Public health is at risk.
Municipal budgets are stretched.
Communities suffer, especially the poor.
Deputy Minister David Mahlobo’s Key Messages
Criminals are sabotaging water systems to make money.
These are acts of economic sabotage and an attack on people’s right to clean water.
The problem is happening across the country, not just in cities.
The government will act with police and other departments to find and arrest those involved.
What’s Being Done
Stronger collaboration with law enforcement.
Use of technology (cameras, sensors, smart tools) to detect and prevent sabotage.
Community education and public campaigns to raise awareness.
Following the 2025 Water and Sanitation Indaba plan to protect infrastructure.
Call to Action for Citizens
Report any suspicious activity or vandalism immediately.
Whistleblowers are encouraged to speak up and will be supported.
Communities must help protect water systems — it’s everyone’s responsibility.
Support from civil society, labour unions, water activists, and traditional leaders is needed.
Final Message
Water is a basic human right.
The government will not allow criminals to take it away.
“Water is life – and we must defend it together.”

Scandal! Star Fana Mokoena’s Character Vukile Khubeka Battles Cancer
Johannesburg, South Africa – July 18, 2025 – Viewers of the popular e.tv show Scandal! were shocked when Vukile Khubeka, played by actor Fana Mokoena, was told he has cancer in a recent episode. Vukile is a strong and powerful character who rose from being a waste collector to owning his own company, uThuli Waste. His cancer diagnosis has surprised fans and started many conversations about health in South Africa.
This new storyline shows Vukile dealing with the pain and emotions that come with cancer. Even though he is usually seen as a strong leader, this plot shows a softer side of him as he deals with family problems and worries about what will happen to his business.
The story has touched many South Africans, especially because cancer is a serious issue in the country. The National Cancer Registry says more than 120,000 new cancer cases are reported each year. Fana Mokoena, who is 54 years old and has played Vukile since 2021, said in an interview with The Sowetan: “This part of the story shows both Vukile’s strength and weakness. It reminds us that even the strongest people can face tough times.”
The Scandal! writers wanted the cancer story to reflect the real struggles people face, especially in poor areas where it’s hard to get medical help. The show is working with the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) to teach viewers about the importance of early testing. Short messages during the show tell people to get checked for cancer.
“Elize Joubert, CEO of CANSA, said, “Finding cancer early can save your life. Vukile’s story is a strong message for everyone to take care of their health.”
Fans are encouraged to keep watching to see how Vukile handles this big challenge. You can also support the #vukilefightscancer campaign to raise awareness.
