Winston Naidoo, the founder of Equipped Digital Goods & Electrical (EDGE), has transformed a lifelong passion for renewable energy into a thriving business. Backed by Shell LiveWIRE and supported through the Raizcorp Supply Chain Support programme, Winston’s journey from curious student to employer of professionals is a blueprint for entrepreneurial resilience and purpose-driven leadership in South Africa’s green tech sector.
“I’ve always been passionate about renewable energy,” Winston shares. “Now I run a tech-forward renewable energy company that’s not only profitable but also creating jobs. That, to me, is the real success.”
From Trade School Dreams to EDGE Reality
Winston’s entrepreneurial spark began early. While attending trade school, he immersed himself in DIY solar projects—buying panels, crafting lighting systems, and finding ways to cut down on electricity use. He foresaw the inevitable rise in energy costs and started experimenting with solutions that would someday become core offerings at EDGE.
After completing his wireman certification and pursuing studies in IT, Winston saw an emerging opportunity: the convergence of energy systems with smart technology. This foresight led to the birth of EDGE—a company at the intersection of renewable energy, IoT (Internet of Things), and digital solutions.
Investing in Lifelong Learning for Business Growth
In the ever-evolving tech landscape, Winston has made continuous learning a personal and professional priority.
“Technology never stands still. That’s what excites me—it keeps you sharp,” he explains. “But like they say on planes: you need to secure your own oxygen mask before helping others. I’ve always believed in investing in myself first through education and professional development.”
Winston’s strategic investment in learning wasn’t just for self-improvement—it was the foundation for building a business that could scale and create employment opportunities.
Accountability That Fuels Performance
One of the game-changers in Winston’s journey was joining the Shell LiveWIRE programme, powered by Raizcorp. This programme offered him mentorship, structure, and accountability.
“As an entrepreneur, you often answer to no one. That’s both liberating and dangerous. The Raizcorp guides helped me measure progress and pinpoint areas that needed attention. It gave me a sense of direction and the confidence to lead strategically.”
One key insight Winston gained was the importance of working on the business, not just in it—a shift that has significantly impacted EDGE’s growth.
“It’s like wanting to lose weight—you know what to do, but doing it is the hard part. The programme forced me to make time for strategy, and that changed everything.”
Scaling Through Crisis and Opportunity
EDGE’s growth story is not without challenges. When Winston first joined the programme in 2020, COVID-19 had gripped the economy. Despite the uncertainty, he set a bold monthly sales goal of R100,000.
“Those early days were tough. We were just surviving,” Winston recalls. “But the demand for solar solutions grew, and we were ready to meet it.”
By the time Winston rejoined the programme in April 2023, EDGE’s monthly revenue had skyrocketed to an average of R1.26 million within just seven months.
Even as loadshedding eased in 2024 and demand cooled slightly, EDGE landed its biggest project to date—a 300kW solar system for one of South Africa’s largest online retailers. The company is also planning a 4.3MW solar installation, requiring the deployment of over 8,000 panels.
“We’ve expanded our fleet and grown our team. I used to handle everything in a little Hyundai Getz. Now we have a full crew and dedicated vehicles. It’s humbling.”
Job Creation and Expansion: A Proud Milestone
One of Winston’s greatest points of pride is his ability to create professional-level jobs.
“It’s not just about growing revenue. It’s about providing real employment—paying professional salaries to skilled workers. We’re even considering opening a second branch. That’s a business win and a personal milestone.”
EDGE’s success reflects not just smart business planning, but a commitment to social impact and economic empowerment in the renewable energy sector.
Words of Wisdom for Aspiring Entrepreneurs
When asked to share advice for other entrepreneurs, Winston is candid and clear:
“There’s that quote, ‘Do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.’ I’d say yes—but also know why you’re doing it. If money’s your only motivation, you’ll always feel empty. You need purpose, and you need to fight for it. If you’re fighting, it means it matters.”
A Heartfelt Thanks to Mentors and Partners
Winston credits much of his success to the support system around him.
“I’m truly grateful to Shell LiveWIRE and Raizcorp. Their tools, belief in me, and structured mentorship made a real difference. Without them, EDGE wouldn’t be where it is.”
He also gives a special nod to his wife and business partner, Janelle:
“She’s been my rock through every challenge—helping balance our business goals with family life. None of this would be possible without her support.”
